We're thrilled to share that the Time to Shine - Women in Sport Magpies Grant has been awarded to a talented local athlete, Sienna Hume! 🏃‍♀️

In 2023, Sienna set her sights on training hard to qualify for the QLD State Sprints Swimming Championships. She successfully qualified for the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, achieving two personal bests on competition day, placing 57th and 66th overall for 11-year-old girls in QLD. Just two weeks later, Sienna shaved another 2 seconds off her 50m backstroke time, equalling the girl who placed 30th in the state.

Sienna is determined to keep improving her times, and we can't wait to see where her dedication to swimming takes her next!

The Magpies Community Grant helped Sienna and her family with expenses for the Championships in Brisbane, including travel, accommodation, and car hire.

Congratulations to Belinda Rule on receiving a "Time to Shine - Women In Sport" Magpies Grant!

Over the past three years, Belinda has honed her coaching skills, leading a squad of 37 athletes to achieve remarkable success across International, National, State, and Regional levels within the Mackay community. As a Level Three High-Performance Coach specialising in middle distance, Belinda supported two athletes at this year's Nationals.

One of her athletes, Elizabeth Lee, competed in the Heptathlon, finishing among the top eleven in Australia. In preparation for this, Belinda spent 4-5 months planning, coaching, and making necessary adjustments to ensure peak performance. Another athlete, Toby Rule, competed in the 2000m Steeplechase, 3000m, and 1500m events, with Belinda providing unwavering support throughout the week. Both athletes are competing in the Under 18 category.

Congratulations once again to Belinda for her dedication and achievements!

A Local Sporting Champion Grant has been awarded to a talented sportsman, congratulations Mark Cottingham!🎱

Representing the Mackay League, Mark was selected to represent Queensland at the recent Australian National Blackball Championships in the Masters category.

Mark's impressive performance at the nationals earned him 3rd place in the Masters Over 50 Singles category, as well as an Australian Champion title in the Mixed Pairs category alongside his partner from Townsville. Additionally, Mark is a past Australian Seniors Singles Champion, having won the title in 2021.

Mark's success at the Australian Championships has led to his selection to represent Australia at the Blackball International World Blackball Championships in October 2024 in England. These championships are the official world championships, governed by the World Pool Association under the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Currently, Mark holds the prestigious position of the number 1 seeded Over 50's Masters player in Australia for his rule set. What an amazing achievement and we wish him the best of luck in the upcoming world championships!

🏏 The Time to Shine - Women In Sport Magpies Grant has been given to a local talented sporting champion. Congratulations to Keeva Mohan.

Keeva played outdoor cricket for nine years and indoor cricket intermittently for about four years. She has made regional representative teams for outdoor cricket in both club and school sports competitions since she was about 12. Her first selection for the Queensland indoor cricket team in 2020 was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19, and no selections were made in 2021 due to widespread restrictions.

The Queensland girls were back-to-back national champions in 2022 and 2023. Due to Keeva's outstanding performance, she was selected for the Australian U18 girls team to compete in Dubai as a wicketkeeper for both the Queensland and Australian teams. The Australian girls won the grand final against New Zealand, making Keeva a world champion!

The Magpies Community Grant helped Keeva and her family recoup some of the expenses of attending the World Series, including travel, accommodation and apparel. Magpies look forward to seeing where your love of cricket continues to take you Keeva.
