MEMBERSHIP PLEDGE RECIPIENTS

With every new membership Magpies Sporting Club donates $2 to one of four charities that the new members choose when filling out their membership application form. Each financial year Magpies Sporting Club offer charities the chance to be one of these four donation recipients for the next financial year.  The chosen four charities will receive their cash donations based on how many new members select their charity on the membership forms for that financial year.  Your charity can apply via our website, click on the button below.

DONATION BOX RECIPIENTS

We have several donation boxes throughout our club, brimming with generosity from our valued patrons who have contributed their small (or sometimes big) change. A Time to Shine - Women in Sport Magpies Grant has been awarded to a talented local athlete, Lainey Walker.

Lainey earned a spot on the Mackay District Hockey team and advanced to the Capricornia Trials in Rockhampton, where she was selected to compete at the inaugural School Sport Australia Games on the Gold Coast. Throughout the championships, Lainey played in a series of two games most days, culminating in a finals series. She felt her skills improved significantly over the course of the competition, and her coach was pleased with her contributions. Her team went on to win the gold medal match, securing the title of National Champions.

Well done Lainey!

The Time to Shine - Women In Sport Grant has been given to a local talented sporting champion. Congratulations to Melissa Parter.🏏

Melissa participated in the National Masters Indoor Cricket Championship in Perth May 2024 representing Qld and was selected to play for Australia in September 2024 in Sri Lanka at World Series.

In 2024, Melissa has taken on multiple roles within the team, contributing as a keeper, bowler, and batter. Despite a strong showing in Perth, the team narrowly missed securing a top-two finish for a shot at the Grand Final. She has now been selected to represent Australia in the Women's Over-30s squad at the World Series in Sri Lanka.

Being a self funded sport, to attend and participate Nationals in Perth May 2024, the Magpies Community Grant has assisted Melissa with the cost of attending this event including, travel and accommodation etc. Well done Melissa, we wish you all the best with your future cricket endeavours!

Congratulations to talented local athlete Millie Mounsey, recipient of the "A Time to Shine - Women in Sport" Magpies Grant! 💃

Millie has competed in numerous local and state Irish dancing competitions, and this year marked her first international appearance at the Australian International Oireachtas in Tweed Heads.

Her dedication was evident in the countless hours spent practicing both in and outside of class. This rigorous event required her to perform in two rounds, and from 30 dancers, only 15 were recalled for the third round. Millie made the cut and delivered a strong performance, ultimately placing 9th overall—a fantastic achievement for her international debut!

Thanks to the Magpies Community Grant, travel expenses, including flights to Brisbane, a rental car, accommodation, and competition fees, were made a little more manageable. Well done, Millie!

A Local Sporting Champion Grant has been awarded to a talented sportsman, congratulations Heath Cruchshank!

Heath's journey to becoming a true Mackay Local Sporting Champion reflects his dedication, hard work, and sacrifices as part of the Australian Team. Despite his natural shyness, Heath has dominated the outrigging scene since 2018, proving himself an exceptional athlete in his age group. He’s also a skilled surfski paddler and volunteer Surf Life Guide, enhancing his understanding of the ocean and outrigging.

In November 2023, Heath's talents shone at the National Sprint Championships at Kawana Waters, where he earned the chance to compete for Australia in two categories. His rigorous training at high-performance camps on the Gold Coast led him to secure spots as an individual paddler in his age group and on the men’s elite team for paddlers under 40—an outstanding achievement given Heath is over 40.

The expenses which Heath accumulated to proudly represent Australia at the IVF World Sprint Championships include round-trip international airfares from Mackay to Hawaii, as well as a 10-day stay in accommodation. The necessity for such a lengthy stay was a result of my participation in multiple races, spanning from heats to preliminary finals, semifinals, and ultimately, the grand finals. With a multitude of age groups and countries competing at this prestigious event, the competition was fierce, and the schedule was jam-packed. Thanks to Magpies Community Grants, Heath was able to receive some financial assistance to help go towards the cost to attend this event. Congratulations Heath, we wish you all the best for the future!

Congratulations to Zeph Buchanan! 🏆

We're thrilled to celebrate Zeph, recipient of the Magpies Local Sporting Champion Grant! This April, he earned a spot in the QRSS 17-19 Years Boys Football State Championships—a major milestone in his football journey. Competing at this level elevated Zeph's game, boosting his skills and confidence.

His journey leading up to this achievement was equally remarkable, scoring in every Division 2 game and netting two goals on his Reserve Grade debut before making his Premier League debut later that evening. Lions President Josh Gerrard highlighted that Zeph, at just 16, was the first to debut on the field (not just the bench) in both Reserve and Premier League on the same night—a standout feat with only a year of football experience. Zeph's impressive showing at the Championships secured him a spot in the Lions Premier League.

With a goal to go professional, Zeph faces every challenge head-on and strives to excel in all his sports endeavours. His commitment since 2011 spans both playing and officiating, shaping his growth in sports.

His 2024 football achievements include:
QRSS 17-19yrs Boys Football State Championship
NQ Team Selection for Futsal Nationals, Sept 2024
MDSS Rep Open Boys, Gladstone
Lions Club Div 1 / Reserve / FQ Premier League
Whitsundays School Futsal Titles Open B, 2nd Place
Mackay Interschool Football WAS Open B (Grand Final, 23/7)

Congratulations Zeph, we wish you all the very best!
