Congratulations to Harriet Shields on receiving a Time to Shine Women in Sport Grant!
Harriet has been dedicated to achieving her netball goals, trialing and being selected for the U12 Mackay Netball Team and completing the Mackay Netball Association preseason squad in November 2023. She was also chosen for the Mackay Monarchs U12 team and plays weekly in the 12A club netball division. Additionally, she represents St Patrick’s in school netball.
Harriet trains 2–3 times a week, preparing for events like the State Age Carnival, where she competed with her team last year. While the team faced challenges due to limited exposure to metro-standard competition, the experience was invaluable for skill development and growth. Competing against strong teams has been a fantastic opportunity for Harriet and her teammates to improve and thrive as regional players in the sport they love.
Congratulations Harriet, we looking forward to following your netball journey!

Congratulations to Community Accommodation & Support Agency for being awarded a Magpies Thriving Community Grant. 🏠
CASA empowers individuals through tailored housing and support services, offering over 10 programs and employing 20 staff to serve Mackay with inclusivity and care. Funds from the Magpies Grant will be going toward The Mackay Homeless Expo in June this year.
The expo is a vital initiative aimed at tackling homelessness in our community. It provides immediate support to those in need, raises awareness about the challenges of homelessness, and focuses on implementing long-term solutions to improve the quality of life for individuals experiencing homelessness. The cost involved with running the event includes expenses for equipment hire, asset items, administrative fees, food and beverages, giveaway items for homeless attendees, in-kind staff hours, and other event-related costs such as First Aid Officers, waste management, and portable toilets.
Magpies is proud to assist with such an important event and we wish CASA all the best with this year`s expo!

Congratulations to Braedon Sturdy, a recipient of the Local Sporting Champion Grant!🏑
Braedon’s hockey journey began at the age of five, playing for the St Francis Xavier Primary School team, and later continuing through Mercy and St Patrick’s College teams. Over the years, he represented Mackay in under 11s, 13s, 15s, and 16s. At just nine years old, he joined the under-13s Mackay team, making his first representative trip to Toowoomba—a pivotal experience that set the foundation for his future achievements.
He has also been selected for Mackay School District hockey teams in under 12s and 13-15s, as well as Capricornia School Hockey teams. Braeden’s love for the game extends to indoor hockey, and he proudly represented Mackay at the under-16 State Championships in Townsville last October.
Recently, Braedon’s team competed in the Division 1 Championship, finishing 7th overall. While not the outcome they aimed for, it secures their spot in Division 1 for next year, with exciting opportunities for the team’s new players. As a senior player, Braedon took on a key leadership role, guiding and supporting his teammates while excelling in multiple positions on the field.
Hockey is Braedon’s passion, and he looks forward to continuing to grow and contribute to the sport for many years to come! Congratulations Braeden.
