INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2024

JASMINE FUHLBOHM

For 7 years, Jasmine has been an integral part of the Magpies family, starting her journey as a youthful 17 year old. What makes Magpies more than just a club for her is the profound sense of community, the familial atmosphere, and the meaningful relationships she has cultivated with both staff and patrons. Magpies, to Jasmine, is not merely an establishment; it’s a distinct culture.

Jasmine draws inspiration from her remarkable role model, her mother, whose strength shone through during a challenging time. Losing her partner, Jasmine’s father, to a heart attack when she was just 10 years old, she witnessed her mother’s resilience and hard work, principles that have become deeply ingrained in Jasmine. The loss of her father compelled her to mature quickly, instilling in her a drive to make a positive impact. Motivated by her personal journey, Jasmine has dedicated herself to a cause close to her heart. In response to her father’s passing, she tirelessly raised over $7,000 and heightened awareness about the crucial need for defibrillator machines. Her efforts reached various charities, organisations, and locations within the Mackay community that lacked access to this vital resource.

Jasmine’s pride lies in her career at Magpies, a journey that began as a barista and recently led to her appointment as the Duty Operations Manager at the remarkable age of 24. The pinnacle of her achievements was being honoured with the 2024 Mackay Young Citizen of the Year Award. For young women aspiring to carve their paths, Jasmine offers empowering advice: “It’s your life, and only you can steer it. Run your own race, and don’t get caught up with other people’s success. Everyone is different and capable of great things.”

XIANGHONG LI (LI)

Meet Li, one of our staff members here at Magpies. Originally from Shenzhen, China, a city near Hong Kong, Li embarked on a new chapter in her life when she moved to Australia in 2014 to join her husband in Mackay. Back in China, Li dazzled audiences as a singer and performer, specialising in the mesmerising art of face changing, a highlight act of Sichuan Opera. Her talents have taken her across the globe, with performances in Singapore, Russia, Malaysia, and Indonesia. She recently performed her act at Magpies to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Since joining the Magpies family three months ago, Li has found a sense of belonging and warmth, describing it as a big, welcoming family.

Despite facing challenges, including her husband’s recent diagnosis of prostate cancer, Li remains resilient and grateful for the support of her colleagues, particularly Kelsey, who has been a wonderful mentor and friend. While hospitality initially sounded daunting to Li, she has since embraced the opportunity Magpies has given her, finding joy in the challenge, and gaining confidence every day. Her advice to women chasing their dreams? “Never give up. Persistence is key, and with determination, success is inevitable.”

JESS PEARCE

Meet Jess, our extraordinary Food, Events and Reception Manager. Born and raised in Bowen, she ventured to Mackay in 2015, fuelled by a sudden desire for change. Seven years ago, she embarked on her journey at Magpies, starting in the Hub Cafe and gracefully rising through every department of the club.

Jess’s story is not just about professional success but also a tribute to her remarkable inspiration, her Nan. A powerful maternal figure, Nan’s influence shaped Jess’s values and character. The loss posed a significant challenge, altering family dynamics, yet Jess emerged stronger, driven by the legacy of her beloved Nan.

Her ascent to a Senior Managerial position at Magpies is a testament to her dedication and tenacity. As an Indigenous woman, Jess has defied odds and shattered stereotypes, proving that with determination, anything is possible. Her message to young women echoes her own journey: “never relinquish hope, take ownership of your dreams, and persist in the face of adversity!” In her journey, Jess found unwavering support and mentorship from her colleagues – Sarah, Kerry, and Michelle. These women inspire her, showcasing the strength of unity and the impact of a supportive community.

MANDATORY HOSPITALITY QUALIFICATIONS

Magpies Sporting Clubs requires all employees who are involved in the service or supply of liquor to hold a current responsible service of alcohol (RSA) certificate. International Men's Day is celebrated today. It is a great opportunity to take part in a global conversation about manhood, masculinity and men's issues. We had a chat with our young Groundsman Josh and spoke about what the day means to him...

"It's important to highlight that talking to other guys can be so helpful. My Dad has always been a constant role model in my life. He's always been there to give financial advice or anything really."

"He's always told me to treat people how you would want to be treated, you never know what other people are going through."

#InternationalMensDay #MagpiesStaff
💁‍♀️ 73% of our workforce are female, well above the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported figure in 2020 of almost 50%. Furthermore, 50% of our Senior Management team are female. #YehTheGirls #MagpiesStaff
International Men's Day, celebrated annually on November 19, is an occasion dedicated to honouring the contributions, achievements, and challenges of men worldwide. We asked our General Manager, Mitch what this day means to him...

"It's important to celebrate and raise awareness and one of the biggest challenges, being the stigma surrounding mental health. Men are often socialised to suppress emotions, which can lead to a lack of help-seeking behaviour. Raising awareness that it's normal to reach out if required, rather than the old school analogy of 'toughen up' is important to promote."

"Prioritising mental and emotional well-being is something that’s become increasingly important to me, and a big part of that is regular exercise, especially going to the gym. I find that fitness provides a structured way to relieve stress, boost mood, and clear my mind."

International Men's Day, observed every year on November 19, is a day to celebrate the contributions, achievements, and challenges faced by men across the globe. This morning we sat down with our Sous Chef, Will and discussed what it was like raising 2 boys and the importance of celebrating this day...

"I've always said to my boys, find something you love doing and you'll never work a day in your life."

"Work ethic is important, and I've always just encouraged them to be happy doing whatever they decide to do in life. They are adults now and don't live in Mackay, but I always try and talk to them regularly on the phone, they know they can ring me whenever they need to chat."

#InternationalMensDay #MagpiesStaff
International Men's Day is marked annually on November 19. The day celebrates the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities and aims to raise awareness of men's wellbeing. Magpies Sport, Community & Customer Relations Manager, Brian 'Butch' highlights the importance of passing on values and principles to the younger generations...

"This is a great time to be young, there are so many possibilities, develop a willingness to try things. Success or failure only comes after an attempt and either way you learn."

"Have some ambition, find the courage to take action. Life's good, don't sit on the sidelines, go get amongst it."

Paul has been OUT STANDING in his field for 20 years (get the pun 🤣).

Starting in 2004 at 24 years old, fresh from his Greenkeeping qualification, Paul took on the responsibility of managing the grounds of multi-sport facility. His vision and dedication have transformed our grounds into something special. From working in during our sweltering summers, facing floods, cyclones, and a pandemic, to hosting national competitions. Paul has risen to every challenge. His leadership and commitment to excellence have put our Magpies grounds on the map 🖤

Some interesting facts Paul shared with us today since he has been at Magpies:
🌱 He has gone through 10,400 litres of paint = 3,400 km of line marking
🌱 100 meters high of grass has been cut
🌱 Over 8,000 cubic meters of top-dressing sand = 800 truck loads
🌱 Irrigation, over 800 million litres of water!

Thank you for all your hard work Paul, we can't wait to see where you take our fields in the next 20 years. #MagpiesStaff #SportingFields #GroundsKeeper
We were excited to be part of the @Aimbigemployment Women in Work Employer Roadshow and connect with some amazing candidates! It was a great chance to dive into important discussions about women in the workforce, how we can make a real impact and what we have to offer at Magpies.

Our Duty Operations Manager, Jasmine, proudly handed over the third and final defibrillator to a local community business today—congratulations to Kookaburra Child Care Centre ❤️ Jasmine has been a passionate advocate, working tirelessly to raise both funds and awareness for defibrillators across Mackay’s charities, organisations, and locations that need this vital equipment.

Having attended Kookaburra Daycare as a child, Jasmine was especially thrilled to present the defibrillator today, emphasising the impact it will have on all who visit the centre. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this cause—your support truly makes a difference!
